Techs of the Month: Matt and Sean HVACR Dads – Brotherhood, Fatherhood, and Community in the Trades

Matt and Sean Cummings, the twin brothers behind @HVACR_dads, share a career in HVACR, life as dads, and a genuine passion for staying connected to the trade community.

Based in New Jersey, Matt and Sean work as service technicians at GE Mechanical in Vineland, handling a wide range of systems including boilers, refrigeration, air conditioning, and controls.

This December, they’re being recognized together as Techs of the Month — a fitting choice for a duo built on trust and showing up for the people around them.

As Sean simply put it, “Two twins are better than one.”

Finding HVACR Through Their Own Journeys

While they now work side by side in the same industry, Matt and Sean each found their way into HVACR on very different paths.

Sean was the first to step into the trades, initially searching for stability and direction.

“I was in college, but I didn’t really have any goals with it,” he shared. “I wanted something more guaranteed and consistent.”

When he started looking into trade school programs, HVACR stood out because it was unfamiliar. “What’s the one thing I don’t know anything about?” he said, “HVAC and refrigeration.”

Within weeks of trade school, Sean knew he had found his place. “This is the best thing I could have ever done.”

Watching Sean and their longtime friend Dave, who went through trade school with Sean and now works alongside them at GE Mechanical, build a future in the trade had planted a seed. But Matt’s decision would come a little later.

At the time, he was studying criminal justice in college but quickly realized it wasn’t leading where he wanted to go. “I had been on quite a few side jobs that Sean and Dave were doing, and I was like, that seems way more fun and I can see an immediate return.”

With fatherhood approaching, the direction became clear for Matt as well, HVACR offered something tangible: a skill, a future, and a way to provide.

Working Together and the Start of HVACR Dads

Once both brothers were established in the field, their shared mindset became one of their biggest strengths.

Although Matt and Sean don’t work together every day, their connection is constant. Whether they’re on the same job or miles apart, they rely on each other as sounding boards.

“If one of us hits a roadblock, we’ll call the other and say, ‘Hey, I’m thinking this, what do you think?’” Sean explained. “We trust each other’s opinions.”

That same collaboration carried over into HVACR Dads, a page they launched in March 2025 after being inspired by the online HVACR community. Seeing other techs share their work, struggles, and growth made them realize they weren’t alone and that others might feel the same way too.

“We’ve always loved creating,” Sean said. “And we realized we weren’t the only nerds who love this field.”

Before posting a single video, they set clear boundaries.

“This is for fun,” Matt shared. “It’s never going to supersede why we’re there in the first place.”

From the beginning, HVACR Dads wasn’t about chasing views, it was about showing up honestly and adding something meaningful to the community that had already inspired them.

Home and Work Life Balance

That same intention shows up in how Matt and Sean approach fatherhood.

Like many in the trades, long days and on-call weeks are part of life. For them, balance comes from being intentional with the time they do have.

“The weekends are for family,” Matt said. “And we’re lucky to have really supportive spouses. I couldn’t do this without my wife.”

For both brothers, the lessons learned in HVACR don’t stop when the workday ends.

Consistency and follow-through matter whether you’re troubleshooting a system or raising a family. As Matt put it, “you need that consistency, and you need to have a standard, right? The standard of work becomes your standard for life, becomes your standard for how you’re raising your kids.”

Sean added that patience is one of areas needed in both work life and family life.

“Some of the biggest mistakes I’ve made were because I was rushing,” he said. “Being methodically patient changes everything.”

That same approach carries over to how they work in the field and the products they choose to rely on.

The Products They Go-To

Over the years, they’ve built a short list of go-to products, including Viper WetRag Putty, which has earned a permanent spot in Sean’s truck.

“I’ve used it religiously,” Sean said. “That thing saved my butt so many times. There’s nothing that even comes remotely close.”

They also pointed to Viper Venom Packs as another staple especially on larger jobs. Earlier this summer, Sean and a coworker were working on a rooftop packed with mini-splits.

“We had a whole rooftop full of mini-splits, and I think we may have used, like, half the bag,” he explained. “It was unbelievable and safe on the coils.”

That kind of reliability is exactly what Matt and Sean value in the field and what they aim to reflect through HVACR Dads.

“There are times in this field when guys feel isolated,” Sean shared. “Sometimes just seeing someone else in it with you makes all the difference.”

That heart, paired with their dedication to both their craft and their families, is exactly why Matt and Sean are our December Techs of the Month.
